POSIPIX Images for Satellite Navigation

POSIPIX PoI Image viewed in Google MapsSatnav devices supporting geotagged pictures

Currently there is little or no link between a location displayed on the web (for example a ‘contact us screen’)
and a satellite navigation device. Typically a user will print off an address screen and then key the address into
their satnav device. This is time consuming and prone to error.

If in this example the ‘contact us screen',  displayed a POSIPIX image of the location, the user could simply save
the image to their satnav device, and providing that the device supported geotagged images then navigate to the
location of the image. A further advantage is that the user gets visual confirmation of their destination.

Effectively the POSIPIX image acts as a ‘token’ holding the location information that can be distributed and shared.

Distribution of POSIPIX Images

As POSIPIX Images are jpeg files they can easily be distributed via existing channels such as Web, ftp, Email, MMS,
WAP push, and removable media such as CF and SD cards.

Benefits to Satellite Navigation Manufacturers

Today in most cases the satellite Navigation unit is relatively ‘standalone’. By supporting geotagged images, the usability
of the device is considerably increased as navigation is simplified and users get visual confirmation of the destination.

POSIPIX Images provide a means of more closely integrating satellite navigation with web and PC applications without the
need for complex proprietary systems. Effectively the satnav unit treats the POSIPIX image as another form of imported
Point of Interest. Satellite Navigation Manufacturers have the opportunity to offer their customers a new value add service
and expand the use of the device.

In dense urban environments POSIPIX images also provide visual confirmation of a destination and also allow routes to be previewed.
This is particularly useful for professional drivers where access and parking restrictions may be in operation.

Example Applications of POSIPIX Images for Navigation

• Any website that needs to provide location information can simply add the relevant POSIPIX image. Users save the image to their
satnav device and then navigate to the co-ordinates within the image.

• Search and Mapping Web sites can easily integrate POSIPIX images so that site visitors having searched for a street or Point of Interest
can simply store the relevant POSIPIX image on their satnav device and then navigate to that location.

• POSIPIX Images can be sent to Mobile phone based satnav units either as an MMS message or via WAP push using SMS. This also
facilitates further distribution, for example a user sending a POSIPIX MMS to a group of friends to confirm the location of a venue, such as a bar.

•  The ability to send a POSIPIX image to a mobile device allows directory services to send both a visual confirmation of a street or
Point of Interest as well as directions to it in cases where a mobile phone is being used for navigation.

• For professional use (such as logistics, mail delivery etc), POSIPIX images can be sent ‘over the air’ (WiFi, GPRS, UMTS etc) to wireless
enabled satnav units providing both location and visual confirmation of the destination. Images can also be annotated, such as ‘Mr Smith’s office is next to the Red Door’.
